Threading the loom
The backbreaking part of weaving is threading the
loom. This is done with a small tool that has a hook
on the end that pulls each thread through a heddle
(a nylon string that has a hole in the centre to
hold the thread).
The loom itself has frames set inside it that hold
the heddles. My smaller loom, shown in these images,
has 4 of these. The warp is threaded in a sequence
that runs up and down the frames. This is what
creates the pattern when the fabric is woven.
To thread the loom when making a silk scarf with
586 threads will take 3 hours and 2 cups of tea.
