Reeding the loom
The final part of preparing the loom for weaving is
to pass all the threads through a metal grill at
the front of the loom called a 'reed'. This helps to
maintain the width of the warp at the front and also
is used to beat the weft thread down each time one
is added.
A flat metal tool is used to pull groups of about 6
threads through each space in the reed. The image
on the right shows a scarf from the 'Pencil Stripe'
collection half reeded.
Once all the warp has passed through the reed it is
tied on to the beam at the front of the loom and
weaving can begin. To reed the loom takes 1.5 hours.
